Thomas Biersteker is the Gasteyger Honorary Professor in International Relations/Political Science at the Graduate Institute, Geneva. He previously held positions at Yale University, University of Southern California, and Brown University, where he directed the Watson Institute for International Studies (1994–2006). His research focuses on global governance, UN sanctions, transnational policy networks, and informal governance mechanisms. He received his Ph.D. and M.S. from MIT and B.A. from the University of Chicago.
Research Interests: Biersteker’s work centers on UN targeted sanctions design, implementation, and reform. He co-developed the SanctionsApp tool for policymakers and led the Targeted Sanctions Consortium (2009–2016). Recent projects include studies on sanctions relief in conflict resolution and UN institutional effectiveness. His collaborations span governments (EU, Switzerland, US), think tanks (Carter Center), and multilateral organizations (UN University).
Key Contributions: Authored/co-authored 11 books including Targeted Sanctions (2016) and Informal Governance in World Politics (forthcoming 2024). His policy reports address sanctions-compliance challenges, mediation strategies, and due process reforms. He serves on councils like the Council on Foreign Relations and chairs the Global Governance Centre at Geneva.
