Thomas Bensby is a Senior Lecturer in Astrophysics and Director of Third Cycle Studies at the Department of Physics, Lund University. His research focuses on understanding the formation and evolution of the Milky Way's stellar populations through observational studies of abundances, kinematics, and ages using high-resolution spectra. He leads key roles in major spectroscopic surveys including Gaia-ESO, WEAVE, and 4MOST, aiming to observe millions of stars over the next decade. Bensby has supervised doctoral students such as S. Alinder and I. Kushniruk. He is involved in projects like NMW (The New Milky Way) funded by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation and 4MOST, a large-scale spectroscopic initiative. His work bridges observational astrophysics with collaborative international efforts, contributing to advancements in stellar population analysis and galactic structure studies.
