Thomas Baier

Thomas Baier is a Professor of Classical Philology at the University of Würzburg, holding the Chair of Classical Philology II (Latin Studies). He is affiliated with the Institute of Classical Philology and has served as Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy since October 2021.

• Education: Studied Latin, Greek, History, and Medieval Latin Philology at the Universities of Freiburg, Munich, Pittsburgh, and Rome (1987-1994)
• Academic Career: Assistant/Associate Professor in Freiburg (1994-2001), Professor in Leipzig (2001-2002), Professor at Bamberg (2002-2008), and University of Würzburg since 2008

His research focuses on classical philology, Latin studies, and ancient rhetoric. He has contributed to editorial projects like Zetemata, NeoLatina, and Würzburger Jahrbücher für die Altertumswissenschaft.

He has held visiting professorships at École normale supérieure in Paris (2000, 2004, 2016) and taught at Università degli studi di Palermo (1998, 2000).
