Dr. Thomas Angelovich is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Health and Biomedical Sciences at RMIT University. He holds honorary fellowships at the University of Melbourne (Peter Doherty Institute) and the Burnet Institute. His research focuses on mechanisms driving inflammatory diseases in individuals with HIV and the elderly, particularly neurocognitive disorders, cardiovascular disease, and HIV persistence in the central nervous system. He supervises multiple research projects, including studies on HIV/SIV reactivation in the brain, transcriptional regulation of HIV, and maternal-fetal disease during influenza infection. His teaching interests span HIV, aging, neuroinflammation, and cardiovascular disease.
Key research areas include HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND), viral reservoirs in the CNS despite ART suppression, and the role of chronic immune activation in disease progression. Collaborations involve nanotechnology applications for thrombus imaging and biomarker development. His work aims to identify therapeutic targets to improve health outcomes for HIV patients.
Recent publications highlight HIV transcription persistence in the brain, SIV/HIV models of neuroinflammation, and the impact of chronic inflammation on monocyte function. His research bridges virology, immunology, and clinical science to address HIV-related comorbidities and aging effects.
