Thomas Altmann

Prof. Dr. Thomas Altmann is a Professor and current Head of the Department of Molecular Genetics at the Leibniz Institute of Plant Genetics and Crop Plant Research (IPK Gatersleben), having previously led the "Developmental Physiology and Genomics" research group at the same institution.

His research centers on plant developmental biology using Arabidopsis thaliana as a model system, with expertise in genomic resource development, stomatal pattern formation, and brassinosteroid phytohormone function. Investigations leverage genetic mutants to dissect stomatal distribution mechanisms and brassinosteroid synthesis/sensing pathways, advancing fundamental understanding of plant growth regulation and environmental adaptation.

As former leader of the "Developmental Physiology and Genomics" group, he established molecular frameworks for studying plant development; his current departmental leadership drives institutional strategy in crop genetics and molecular resource curation.
