معرفی
Thomas Abbt (1738–1766) was a German Enlightenment philosopher and academic. He held the rank of Professor of Mathematics at the University of Rinteln and previously served as außerordentlicher Professor of Philosophy in Frankfurt an der Oder. His academic career was marked by brief tenures due to health struggles and longing for Berlin. He studied theology, philosophy, and mathematics at the University of Halle.
His research focused on political philosophy, ethics, and social theory, best known for Vom Tode fürs Vaterland (1760) and Vom Verdienste (1765). These works explored civic duty, patriotism, and moral contribution to society. His critiques of Zimmermann and Wolff influenced later thinkers like Herder.
Abbt contributed 37 reviews to Nicolai's Allgemeine Deutsche Bibliothek, showcasing his engagement with Enlightenment literary discourse. Though unfulfilled, his wish to join Berlin's intellectual circle was central to his identity, reflected in correspondence with Mendelssohn and Nicolai.
Legacy includes Herder's posthumous praise and Mendelssohn's dedication of Phädon. His untimely death at 27 truncated a promising career, yet his writings remain foundational for understanding 18th-century German philosophical discourse.
