معرفی
Johann Christoph Gatterer (1727–1799) was a prominent German historian and professor at the University of Göttingen for four decades. He specialized in historiography, developing modern approaches to historical interpretation emphasizing causal relations and cultural perspectives. A key figure in the Enlightenment-era reform of history as a discipline, he focused on ancillary fields like genealogy, heraldry, diplomacy, and physical geography.
After studying theology at Altdorf University, he habilitated in 1752 and taught in Nuremberg before being appointed to Göttingen in 1759. He co-founded the Royal Historical Institute (1764) and edited major journals like Allgemeine historische Bibliothek (1767–71) and Historisches Journal (1772–81), rigorously critiquing historical works. His methodologies emphasized 'pragmatic history' to uncover universal connections between events.
Gatterer’s 15 universal history works sought systematic chronologies and causal explanations. He also pioneered university-level physical geography courses alongside Immanuel Kant. Inducted into the Göttingen Academy of Sciences (1776), he shaped historical education through textbooks like Handbuch der Universalhistorie and Kurzer Begriff der Weltgeschichte. His legacy includes advancing historical ancillary sciences into modern disciplines.
