Thomas A. Wilson is the Bates and Benjamin Professor of Classical and Religious Studies and Professor of History at Hamilton College. He earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago with prior degrees including an M.A. from Chicago and a B.A. in East Asian Studies from the University of Connecticut, Storrs.
Research Focus: Wilson specializes in Confucian ritual practices, Imperial Chinese cultural history, and comparative ritual theory across China, India, and Greece. His work examines how sacrificial rites and Confucian orthodoxy were constructed through state and family liturgies, challenging modern Western rationalist interpretations of Confucianism.
Publication Trends: His writings span ritual theory, Chinese religious studies, and comparative historical analysis, with recent work exploring devotional practices in imperial contexts. Key themes include genealogies of tradition, elite cultural politics, and cross-cultural philosophical debates.
