Thomas A. Chavez is a Research Assistant Professor at the University of New Mexico's School of Medicine, Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. His work focuses on health and well-being within Latinx communities, particularly addressing disparities through critical perspectives.

Chavez's research integrates intersectionality, critical race theory, feminist, and queer theories to examine issues affecting marginalized communities in New Mexico. He specializes in family stress, immigrant/racial trauma, substance misuse, youth resiliency, and culturally centered interventions.
He teaches undergraduate courses for aspiring helping professionals and graduate-level courses on multicultural issues in counseling, psychotherapy practice, supervision, and research. His postdoctoral training was completed at the Center on Alcoholism, Substance Abuse, and Addictions (CASAA) at the University of New Mexico.
