Thoko Kaime is a Professor and Chair of African Legal Studies at the University of Bayreuth, holding a dual role as an adjunct faculty member in the M.A. Human Rights program at Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). He leads the Tanzanian-German Centre for Eastern African Legal Studies (TGCL) and serves as Trustee of the Essex Wildlife Trust. Before his current position, he worked as a Senior Teaching Fellow at SOAS University of London and the University of Essex, and co-chaired legal aspects of sustainable energy initiatives at George-Washington University.
His research critiques international legal frameworks through a socio-legal lens, focusing on human rights in Africa, children’s rights, and the intersection of law with sustainability governance. He emphasizes legitimacy and public participation in global policy-making.
