Thobani Hlophe is a Research Fellow at the University of Oxford's Department of Engineering Science, School of Engineering Science. He holds a PhD in Hydrodynamics and Ocean Engineering from the University of Western Australia, alongside BSc and MSc degrees in Mathematics from Southern Africa. Prior to his PhD, he worked as a secondary school teacher specializing in Physical Sciences.
His research focuses on physics-based phase-resolved ocean wave modeling for short-term predictions, with applications in ocean renewable energy systems. Current projects include investigating wave-structure interactions and breaking wave loads on offshore platforms, notably through the EPSRC-funded SeaSwallows project on wave loading for offshore wind turbines.
Thobani is affiliated with the Environmental Fluid Mechanics research group at Oxford. While no specific awards are listed, his work contributes to advancing sustainable energy solutions through fluid dynamics innovations.
