Thiago Freires is a Junior Research Fellow at the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education (CIIE) under the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences at the University of Porto, Portugal. He holds a PhD in Education Sciences (2019) and MSc (2013) from the same institution, along with a BA in Languages from the University of São Paulo (2009).
His research focuses on educational trajectories of disadvantaged youth, school pedagogies, family influence on education, and higher education internationalization. He leads projects like ADHERe (2023-2029), exploring pathways for displaced/low-SES students, and coordinates the MIIT project mapping teacher education internationalization. Freires actively participates in national/international initiatives, including EU-funded programs like EMSTEP and Erasmus+ Teacher Academy SmartStart.
Teaching encompasses all tertiary education levels at FPCEUP, with courses in education science. He serves as an ad hoc reviewer for Scopus-indexed journals since 2019 and contributed to over 50 publications since 2012. His work spans qualitative methodologies like narrative analysis and participatory action research, addressing topics such as citizenship education, digital innovation in teaching, and youth agency in peripheral regions.
