Theresa T. Lu, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Microbiology and Immunology and Pediatrics at Weill Cornell Medicine and holds the St. Giles Chair for Research at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) Research Institute. She is a faculty member in Pediatric Rheumatology and Rheumatology at HSS and serves as Co-Director of the Weill Cornell PhD Program in Immunology and Microbial Pathogenesis. Her research is centered on immune circuitry in autoimmune and musculoskeletal diseases, particularly lupus, with a focus on immune-tissue interactions, lymphatic function, and stromal cell regulation.
- BS, Yale University
- MD, PhD, Yale University (PhD with Joseph Madri)
- Residency: Pediatrics, Children's Hospital of Philadelphia
- Fellowship: Pediatric Rheumatology, University of California, San Francisco
- Postdoctoral Training: Jason Cyster Lab, UCSF
Dr. Lu's research investigates how tissue injury signals are communicated to lymphoid organs to modulate immune responses. Her lab explores key areas such as:
- Lymph node vascular-stromal microenvironment in autoimmunity
- Langerhans cell function in lupus photosensitivity
- Lymphatic dysfunction in disease
- Immune cell roles in tissue repair and fibrosis
Her recent publications (2022–2025) reveal a strong focus on lymphatic signaling, interferon-driven skin inflammation in lupus, and the role of stromal cells in regulating B and T cell responses. These studies employ advanced immunological, molecular, and imaging techniques to uncover mechanisms underlying autoimmune flares and tissue damage.
Scientific awards and honors include:
- American College of Rheumatology Young Investigator Award
- Weill Cornell Teaching and Mentoring Award
- Induction into the American Society for Clinical Investigation (2011)
- Induction into the Henry Kunkel Society (2015)
- St. Giles Chair for Pediatric Research (2020)
Dr. Lu is deeply committed to mentoring and education, advising graduate students and postdocs through her lab and institutional programs. Her research is supported by multiple grants from the NIH, Department of Defense, St. Giles Foundation, and Barbara Volcker Center. She leads the Theresa Lu Lab, which actively recruits new talent and promotes interdisciplinary collaboration to advance understanding and treatment of rheumatic diseases.
The Lu Lab operates at the HSS Research Institute, 515 East 71st Street, New York, NY, and is a key contributor to the Autoimmunity and Inflammation Program and Lupus and APS Center at HSS.
