Theresa I Shireman is the Director of the Center for Gerontology and Health Care Research and Professor in the Department of Health Services, Policy & Practice at Brown University's School of Public Health. She specializes in pharmaceutical policy, pharmacoepidemiology, and health economic evaluations, with a focus on vulnerable populations such as those on chronic dialysis, older adults, and transgender individuals. Her research includes developing methodologies to track medication exposure, predicting bleeding risks for warfarin use, and evaluating state Medicaid programs.
Education: PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1996), MS from the University of Iowa (1992).
Research Interests: Cardiovascular drugs, comparative effectiveness research, end-stage renal disease, kidney transplantation, Medicaid/Medicare policy, multiple sclerosis, transgender health, and health disparities. Current projects address Medicaid prescription caps' impact on HIV adherence, antipsychotic reduction policies in nursing homes, and transgender health outcomes.
Teaching: Courses include 'Conflicting Priorities? Prescription Profits + the Public’s Health' and 'Introduction to Pharmacoepidemiology'.
Labs/Teams: Leads the Center for Gerontology and collaborates with the Department of Epidemiology and Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research.
