Theresa Flanigan, Ph.D., is an Assistant Professor in the Master of Arts in Art History Program at the School of Art, Texas Tech University. She earned her Ph.D. in the History of Art from the Institute of Fine Arts at New York University.

Dr. Flanigan specializes in Italian late medieval and Renaissance art and architectural history, with research focusing on premodern scientific approaches to the body, senses, and emotions; Italian architecture and urbanism; women's history; cultural constructions of identity; Christian art and ethics; and viewer response to images. Her work has been supported by prestigious fellowships and grants.
She has published extensively on topics including the architectural history of Florence’s Ponte Vecchio, emotional expression in Renaissance female portraits (e.g., Mona Lisa), devotional functions of religious images, and intersections between medical science and art. Her recent book, The Ponte Vecchio: Architecture, Politics, and Civic Identity in Late Medieval Florence (2024), exemplifies her interdisciplinary approach.
