Professor Theoni Georgiou is a Professor in Polymer Chemistry at the Department of Materials, Faculty of Engineering, Imperial College London. She holds affiliations with multiple research centers, including the Grantham Institute, Institute for Molecular Science and Engineering, and Ocean Plastic Solutions Network. Her academic journey includes a B.Sc. (2001) and Ph.D. (2006) in Chemistry and Polymer Chemistry from the University of Cyprus, followed by postdoctoral work at Rice University and a UK RCUK Fellowship at the University of Hull before joining Imperial College in 2014.
Her research focuses on synthesizing and characterizing polymers for biomedical applications, such as drug/gene delivery, tissue engineering, and stimuli-responsive materials. Key areas include thermoresponsive polymers, block copolymers, and polymeric surfactants. She leads the Georgiou Polymer Group (GPG), which develops advanced materials like thermogels and graphene-based inks for 3D bioprinting.
Professor Georgiou has received the 2016 Macro Group UK Young Researchers Medal and serves as an Associate Editor of the European Polymer Journal. Her work spans over 100 publications, including studies on polymer architecture effects, hydrogel networks, and biomedical applications. Collaborations include projects on polymer-glass hybrids, nanomedicine, and microfluidic fabrication of drug delivery systems.
She supervises a dynamic group of PhD students, postdocs, and visiting scholars, emphasizing interdisciplinary research. Current projects explore self-assembled polymers, injectable gels, and hybrid materials for regenerative medicine. Her lab is equipped for advanced polymer synthesis and characterization, leveraging techniques like group transfer polymerization and living polymerization methods.
