معرفی
Theodore Betley is the Erving Professor of Chemistry and Director of Graduate Studies at Harvard University’s Department of Chemistry. He leads the Betley Research Group, which is actively recruiting graduate students and focuses on cutting-edge synthetic inorganic chemistry.
Education
- BSE in Chemical Engineering – University of Michigan
- PhD in Inorganic Chemistry – California Institute of Technology (Caltech), advisor: Jonas Peters
- NRSA Postdoctoral Fellowship – Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), mentor: Dan Nocera
His research program centers on designing novel inorganic complexes that can activate otherwise unreactive chemical bonds. By leveraging high-spin, first-row transition-metal catalysts, the group achieves selective C–H bond functionalization and multi-electron small-molecule activation. State-of-the-art air-free synthesis, advanced spectroscopy, and theoretical modeling underpin every discovery.
Awards & Recognition
- MIT Technology Review – TR35 (Top 35 US Innovators)
- NSF Early Career Award
- DOE Early Career Award
- DOD Early Career Award
Advising & Support
The Betley Lab welcomes new graduate students each year and is supported by federal grants from NSF, DOE, and DOD. Laboratory management is expertly handled by Pamela Hernandez (phernandez@fas.harvard.edu).
Research Environment
The group occupies space in Mallinckrodt Laboratory at 12 Oxford Street, Cambridge, MA, and maintains fully equipped glove-box and Schlenk lines for rigorous air-free chemistry.
