Mikhail V. Barybin is a Teaching Professor in the Chemistry Department at the University of Kansas. He holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Minnesota (1999) and completed postdoctoral research at MIT (1999-2001). His research focuses on inorganic, coordination, organic, and materials chemistry, with an emphasis on organometallic synthesis, electron delocalization, and the development of hybrid metal/organic systems incorporating azulene motifs for applications in molecular electronics and nanotechnology.
His lab is equipped for air- and moisture-sensitive synthesis, featuring Schlenk lines, glove boxes, and advanced analytical tools like NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. He has advised numerous students, including 20+ Ph.D., Master’s, and undergraduate researchers. Notable awards include the NSF CAREER Award (2006-2011), DuPont Young Professor Award (2007-2010), and Chancellors Club Teaching Professorship (2021).
Barybin’s research explores azulene-based organometallics, electrochromic systems, and designed organic surfaces for electronics. Recent work includes tuning redox profiles of biazulene platforms and synthesizing novel ligands for molecular electronics. His lab actively engages in collaborative projects, leveraging theoretical and experimental methods to advance material design.
