Theo Lipfert

Theo Lipfert is a Professor in the School of Film & Photography within the College of Arts & Architecture at Montana State University. His academic appointment reflects his expertise in both traditional filmmaking techniques and emerging film technologies.

Professor Lipfert's educational background includes an M.F.A. in Fine Art, Painting from Hunter College, CUNY (1989) and a B.A. in Fine Art from Hampshire College (1984). This foundation in visual arts has informed his comprehensive approach to film education and production.

His research interests span a comprehensive range of film disciplines including Film Production, Film Post Production, Audio engineering, Color Grading, Animation, Visual Effects, Documentary filmmaking, History of Technology, 360 VR, and Experimental Film. Professor Lipfert's creative output demonstrates a consistent pattern of blending artistic vision with technical expertise across multiple formats, from traditional film production to emerging technologies like virtual reality and science communication through visual media.

Professor Lipfert has contributed to the academic community through external review services for tenure and promotion committees at East Carolina University and Southern Illinois University. His professional service extends to community engagement, including work with Sacajawea Middle School.

His recent work shows continued active engagement with both academic responsibilities and industry practices, particularly through television scriptwriting projects and science communication initiatives that have achieved international exhibition.
