Themis Kyriakides is a Professor of Pathology and Biomedical Engineering at Yale School of Medicine. He holds dual appointments in the Department of Pathology and the School of Engineering and Applied Science. Dr. Kyriakides completed his PhD at Washington State University in 1993, followed by postdoctoral training at the University of Washington. He serves as Director of Graduate Studies for the Experimental Pathology PhD program and mentors students from the School of Engineering.
His research focuses on cellular and molecular mechanisms of tissue repair, with a particular emphasis on extracellular matrix interactions, inflammation, and biomaterials. Key areas include engineering biomaterials to enhance tissue regeneration, studying the role of matricellular proteins like thrombospondin-2, and developing therapies for diabetic wound healing. His lab has pioneered novel hydrogel systems and nanomaterials for medical applications.
Dr. Kyriakides has authored over 75 publications, including recent work on alginate-based hydrogels, photosensitive nanoprobes, and bone repair strategies. He is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. His research is supported by NIH grants and collaborations with institutions like the Diabetes Research Center and Yale Fibrosis Program.
Dr. Kyriakides' lab (Kyriakides Lab) investigates biomaterial-tissue interfaces, angiogenesis, and the foreign body response. He collaborates widely, with frequent co-authors including Hao Xing, Yaqing Huang, and Frederic Pincet. His work bridges engineering and medicine, aiming to translate biological insights into clinical solutions for chronic diseases and tissue damage.
