Thembela Kepe is a Professor and Chair in the Department of Geography at the University of Toronto Scarborough (UTSC). He is cross-appointed to the Department of Global Development Studies at UTSC, where he applies his interdisciplinary expertise in land rights, political ecology, and people-environment interactions. His research focuses on Southern Africa, particularly South Africa, with additional fieldwork in Liberia and Canada.
- Research Focus: Land rights, rural resistance politics, development politics, and political ecology.
- Awards: Fellowship of the Society of South Africa Geographers (2020).
- Publications: Over 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and co-editor of four books on land justice, conservation, and rural revolts.
Currently, he is completing a biography of his late uncle, a commander in the anti-apartheid armed resistance. His work bridges academia and activism, examining the intersections of land governance, rural struggles, and development paradigms.
