Thayne Sweeten serves as a Professional Practice Professor and Director of Undergraduate Studies at Utah State University. His educational background includes a PhD in Medical Neurobiology from Indiana University (2003) and a BS in Psychology from Utah State University (1997). He teaches diverse courses including Immunology (BIOL 5150), Virology (BIOL 5240), Human Anatomy (BIOL 2320), and directs prehealth professional development (BIOL 1060).
Dr. Sweeten's research focuses on immunological mechanisms in neurodevelopmental disorders, particularly autism spectrum disorder. His work integrates virology, genetics, and neuroimmunology to investigate immune dysfunction, autoimmune responses, and viral triggers in autism pathogenesis. Key research areas include HLA gene associations, cytokine profiles, and biomarker discovery for early diagnosis.
His publication trends show consistent focus on neuroimmune interactions in autism, with recent work expanding into genetic associations (HLA/KIR genes) and prenatal immune biomarkers. Earlier studies established foundations in viral links (measles, CMV), autoantibody responses, and neurotransmitter-immune crosstalk.
Awards and Honors:
- Researcher of the Year (2014) - Utah State University Brigham City
- National Academies Education Fellow in Life Sciences (2009)
- Dissertation Award (2004) - International Society for Autism Research
As Director of Undergraduate Studies, Dr. Sweeten oversees academic programs and mentors students through biology professions courses. He maintains an active teaching schedule across undergraduate and graduate levels, with consistent course offerings in human anatomy, immunology, and virology through 2024.
