Adjunct Clinical Professor Thanh Phan is a full-time staff specialist neurologist at Monash Health, affiliated with the School of Clinical Sciences at Monash University. He holds a position in the Department of Medicine and leads the Acute Stroke, Data Mining, and Imaging Division within the Stroke and Ageing Research Group (STAR). His expertise spans cerebrovascular diseases, neuroimaging, and clinical trial design. Prof Phan completed his MBBS at the University of New South Wales, undertook fellowships at the Mayo Clinic, and earned a PhD from the University of Melbourne focusing on MR Imaging in acute ischemic stroke.
His research interests include neuroimaging techniques (CT, MRI, PET), stroke recurrence prediction, and video-based neurological teaching. He actively supervises 4 PhD students and has led numerous NHMRC-funded projects. Prof Phan is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of Physicians and a former NHMRC Postgraduate Research Scholar. Key collaborations include the FRONTIER-AP thrombectomy trial and the MASTERS-2 study on stroke treatment. His clinical roles include managing stroke units at Clayton and Dandenong campuses and running specialized outpatient clinics for stroke patients.
Recent projects include investigating molecular targets for stroke-associated pneumonia and developing predictive tools for post-stroke cognitive impairment. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in improving health equity and reducing non-communicable diseases.
