Mohammed Almekhlafi is an Associate Professor at the University of Calgary's Cumming School of Medicine with appointments in the Department of Clinical Neurosciences, Department of Radiology, and Department of Community Health Sciences. He is also a Full Member of both the Hotchkiss Brain Institute and O'Brien Institute for Public Health. As an interventional stroke neurologist, Dr. Almekhlafi maintains an active clinical practice at the Foothills Medical Center.
Dr. Almekhlafi earned his Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery from King Abdulaziz University in 2003, followed by FRCPC in Neurology from the University of Calgary in 2010, and an MSc in Clinical Epidemiology from the University of Calgary in 2012. His extensive educational background has positioned him at the intersection of clinical practice and research methodology.
His primary research focuses on improving outcomes of endovascular therapy for cerebrovascular disorders through optimizing selection and treatments using available and novel imaging and therapeutic techniques. Dr. Almekhlafi's work spans multiple critical areas including endovascular thrombectomy, brain aneurysms, carotid stenosis, cerebral arteriovenous malformation, and selective brain hypothermia. His recent publications demonstrate a strong emphasis on comparative effectiveness research, particularly examining tenecteplase versus alteplase for acute ischemic stroke, workflow optimization in stroke systems of care, and advanced imaging techniques for patient selection.
Among his notable achievements is receiving Canada's Governor General's Gold Medal from the University of Calgary in 2013, recognizing exceptional academic accomplishment. His research has resulted in over 400 publications with significant impact in the stroke field.
Dr. Almekhlafi actively contributes to multiple large-scale clinical trials and registries including the AcT trial, ESCAPE-NA1, and RESCUE-ICAS registry. His work has substantial implications for clinical practice guidelines and has influenced stroke care systems across Canada. His research team collaborates extensively with neurologists, neuroradiologists, neurosurgeons, and epidemiologists to address critical questions in acute stroke management.
