Thane Wibbels is a Professor and Undergraduate Honors Program Director at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), Department of Biology. He holds a B.S. in Zoology from the University of Nebraska, an M.S. in Biology (Marine Science Program) from the University of Houston, and a Ph.D. in Zoology from Texas A&M University. His research focuses on marine turtle biology, including physiology, ecology, evolution, and conservation, particularly temperature-dependent sex determination (TSD) and climate change impacts. He has conducted fieldwork on the Great Barrier Reef and collaborated with institutions like the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS). Notable grants include an NSF-funded study on sea turtle reproductive endocrinology and an NIH fellowship for TSD research.
Research interests include:
- Sea turtle conservation and behavior
- Reproductive physiology and endocrinology
- Evolutionary implications of TSD
- Climate change effects on marine ecosystems
He has received the NIH National Research Service Award and contributed to collaborative projects with global partners like Australia’s Colin Limpus. His work bridges basic science and applied conservation, emphasizing endangered species survival strategies.
Advising and grants involve mentoring graduate students in marine biology and ecology, with NSF and NIH funding supporting his research. His lab integrates field studies and physiological analyses to address ecological and evolutionary questions in marine systems.
