Dr. Teya Sugareva is a senior assistant professor at the National Academy of Theater and Film Arts “Krustyo Sarafov”, affiliated with the Department of Dramatic Theater under the Faculty of Performing Arts. She specializes in directing, acting, and stage speech instruction within bachelor’s programs. Her research focuses on Bulgarian directing practices during the 1980s and 1990s, as evidenced by her dissertation on modernist aesthetics and absurd dramaturgy.
Since 2012, she has worked as a freelance director, earning prestigious awards like the Askeer and Icarus. Her repertoire spans classic works (e.g., Dead Souls, 12th Night) and contemporary plays by Bulgarian/foreign authors. In 2025, she staged The Little Prince and Tennessee Williams’ works at the Hanger Theatre in the U.S., participating in the Drama League’s Directors Project during that period.
Her academic contributions include curriculum development in theater education and cross-cultural collaboration through international programs. Dr. Sugareva’s work bridges traditional and modern theatrical practices, emphasizing adaptive reinterpretations of canonical texts.
