Mira Kalanova is an Associate Professor of Screen Design at the National Academy of Dramatic Arts and Film "Krastyo Sarafov", where she also serves as Head of the Stage and Screen Design department. She is a prominent figure in Bulgarian theatrical design with extensive experience in scenography and costume design for both theater and film productions across Bulgaria.
Her educational background includes a Doctorate in Cinema Studies and Cinema Art (2011) from the National Academy of Theatre and Film Studies "Krastyo Sarafov", a Master of Fine Arts in Scenography (1994-1999) from the National Academy of Arts, and studies at the National Art High School "Ilia Petrov" in Sofia (1989-1994).
Professor Kalanova's research and creative work focuses on scenography, stage and screen design, costume design, and visual arts. Her work demonstrates a consistent exploration of theatrical space, visual narrative, and the relationship between performer and environment. She has developed particular expertise in creating immersive theatrical experiences through innovative set design and costume work that enhances dramatic storytelling.
Her recent creative output shows a strong focus on contemporary Bulgarian theater productions, classical adaptations (particularly Shakespeare), and film projects. The works span traditional theater venues across Bulgaria as well as international collaborations, reflecting her standing in both national and international theatrical communities.

Professor Kalanova has mentored numerous theater productions and has been instrumental in developing the Scenography specialty at NATFA. She has participated extensively in international forums including multiple appearances at the Prague Quadrennial (2003, 2007, 2011, 2015), where she served as curator and designer for Bulgaria's national exhibition, and the World Stage Design event in Cardiff (2013). Her work bridges academic instruction with professional practice, contributing significantly to Bulgaria's theatrical landscape.
