Tess Bridgeman is a prominent national security legal expert serving as Senior Fellow and Visiting Scholar at NYU Law School's Reiss Center on Law and Security and Co-Editor-in-Chief of Just Security. She brings extensive government experience from her service as Special Assistant to President Obama, Associate Counsel to the President, and Deputy Legal Adviser to the National Security Council, where she advised on the full spectrum of national security and foreign policy issues.
Her educational credentials include a D.Phil. in International Relations from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar; a J.D. from NYU Law School, magna cum laude and Order of the Coif (as a Root-Tilden-Kern Scholar, Institute for International Law and Justice Scholar, and Truman Scholar); and a B.A. with University Distinction from Stanford University.
Bridgeman's research focuses on the critical intersection of law and national security, with particular expertise in war powers, international humanitarian law, counterterrorism policy, and the legal frameworks governing military operations. She has taught cyber law and policy at Stanford University and regularly lectures on national security law at Berkeley Law. Her scholarly work demonstrates deep engagement with contemporary conflicts, analyzing legal dimensions of the Israel-Hamas war, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, and U.S. military operations in Syria.
