Terry Wotherspoon is a Professor of Sociology at the University of Saskatchewan, recognized as a Distinguished Professor in 2024. His academic background includes a Ph.D. in Sociology from Simon Fraser University, alongside degrees in Sociology (M.A., B.A.) and Education (B.Ed.). Before his academic career, he worked as an educator at elementary and secondary levels.
His research focuses on Sociology of Education, Indigenous-Settler Relations, Social Policy, and Work/Labour Markets, with funding from SSHRC, Saskatchewan Learning, the Laidlaw Foundation, and other agencies. Key projects include school reconciliation processes in Canada, social inclusion in settler colonial contexts, 20th-century sociology development, and international migration impacts.
Publications include The Sociology of Education in Canada (5th ed., 2018) and The Legacy of School for Aboriginal People (2003). His recent articles (2020-2025) address decolonizing education, Indigenous student success, reconciliation discourses, and policy critiques. He supervises students in topics like education policy, Indigenous studies, and social inequality.
Scientific awards include the Canadian Sociological Association's Outstanding Contribution Award (2021), Whitworth Award (2002), and Best Article Award (2021). Administrative roles include President of the Canadian Sociological Association and editorial work at the Canadian Review of Sociology. He holds Adjunct Professor appointments in China and has advised numerous Ph.D. and M.A. candidates.
