Dean's research centers on Historical Musicology with specialized expertise in 19th-century Russian literature and Prokofiev scholarship. His work bridges Russian music studies, contemporary art music pedagogy, and music librarianship. He has developed innovative teaching methodologies like the Composer Interview Project to engage students with living composers and contemporary repertoire, addressing the persistent challenge of student disconnection from post-1900 art music.
His scholarly publications demonstrate consistent focus on Russian composers (particularly Prokofiev and Shostakovich), Soviet-era music aesthetics, and contemporary music pedagogy. Dean's work reveals strong patterns in Russian music historiography, film music analysis, and the development of practical frameworks for integrating contemporary practice into traditional music history curricula.
Scientific Awards:
- François Lesure Award (2018) from the International Association of Music Libraries
- Provost’s Award for Excellence in Student Learning Assessment (2022)
