Terry Ellis, PhD, PT, FAPTA, is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Physical Therapy at Boston University, where he also directs the Center for Neurorehabilitation. He holds licenses in physical therapy (MA, 1988–present) and is a Board-Certified Neurologic Clinical Specialist (1999–present).
Education:
- Bachelor of Science, Springfield College (1987)
- Master’s in Physical Therapy, Springfield College (1988)
- PhD in Behavioral Neuroscience, Boston University School of Medicine (2005)
Research Focus: Dr. Ellis leads pioneering work in neurorehabilitation, specializing in Parkinson's disease. His lab integrates mobile health technologies, soft robotics, and digital therapeutics to improve gait and mobility. Key initiatives include developing clinical practice guidelines, validating AI-driven diagnostic tools using nocturnal breathing signals, and designing exosuits for post-stroke rehabilitation. His research emphasizes real-world applicability, with projects like autonomous music-based interventions and fNIRS-based brain activity monitoring during natural walking.
Publication Trends: Recent articles demonstrate a strong focus on digital biomarkers (e.g., radio-wave gait monitoring), wearable robotics (exosuits for stroke/Parkinson’s), and telehealth strategies. Cross-cutting themes include AI-enabled healthcare solutions, standardization of gait protocols, and inclusive research design for diverse populations.
Awards:
- Shawn Thornton Award for Excellence (American Parkinson Disease Association, 2022)
- Catherine Worthingham Fellow (APTA, 2020)
- Excellence in Research Award (Academy of Neurologic PT, 2019)
- Chattanooga Research Award (APTA, 2016)
Teaching & Leadership: Ellis teaches evidence-based practice courses (e.g., SAR HP561) and mentors through the Center for Neurorehabilitation. He collaborates globally on projects like the WHIP-PD trial and Parkinson’s Foundation guidelines, emphasizing proactive rehabilitation models and technology-aided therapeutic exercise.
