Terry Berlier is a Professor of Art & Art History and by courtesy Professor of Music at Stanford University, where she directs the Sculpture Lab and serves as Director of Graduate Studies. She holds an MFA from the University of California, Davis, and a BFA from Miami University. Her interdisciplinary practice explores queerness and ecologies through kinetic sculpture, sound art, and multimedia installations.
Education: MFA in Studio Art (UC Davis, 2003), BFA in Art (Miami University, 2000).
Research Interests: Terry’s work investigates human interactions with queerness, environmental conditions, and cultural memory. She employs humor and materiality to address themes of identity, colonization, and ecological fragility. Her sculptures often integrate mechanical systems and sound to create immersive, politically charged environments.
Exhibitions: Her work has been featured globally, including at the Marc Chagall National Museum (France), Museum of Old and New Art (Australia), and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (San Francisco). Recent exhibitions include A Kind of Ache (2021) and I Am What I Am Not Yet (2020).
Awards & Grants: Recipient of the Creative Work Fund Grant, Center for Cultural Innovation Grant, and Stanford’s Faculty Creative Projects Seed Grant (2023-25). She has held residencies at Recology SF, Montalvo Arts Center, and the Hungarian Multicultural Center.
Teaching & Mentorship: Advises students in sculpture and queer art practices. Courses include Queer Sculpture, Kinetic Sculpture, and Ecology of Materials.
Labs & Initiatives: Leads the Sculpture Lab, fostering experimental interdisciplinary art. Engaged in Indigenous rematriation efforts and gender studies through affiliations with Stanford’s Feminist, Gender, and Sexuality Studies Program.
