Professor Frew’s research and artistic practice explore the conceptual boundaries between fine art and craft. She critically engages with media such as textiles, natural inks, and illustration—traditionally labeled as 'craft'—to challenge hierarchies in art. Her work often draws from folklore, demonology, and pop culture, such as the Pokémon franchise, to create contemporary commentaries on magic, identity, and emotion.
Her recent artworks and exhibitions, including Ars Goetiamon, Helpless, and Auto da Fé, reflect themes of emotional vulnerability, mythological narratives, and postmodern reinterpretations of ancient grimoires. These projects span media from embroidery and gouache to ceramic tiles and augmented reality concepts, demonstrating a diverse and evolving practice.
Terri has exhibited internationally and participated in artist residencies such as at the Annmarie Sculpture Garden & Art Center. Her creative use of natural pigments from black walnut and fire bush underscores her engagement with materiality and the environment.
She has received no formally listed scientific awards, but her work is widely exhibited and available through her online shop. She mentors students through her teaching and studio practice, though no specific advisees are named.
Professor Frew leads a vibrant studio practice that includes residencies, community engagement, and interdisciplinary collaboration. She is involved with local arts centers such as the Copper Country Community Arts Center and the Finnish American Heritage Center, contributing to regional cultural development.
