Terri Givens is a Professor in the Department of Political Science at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Faculty of Arts. Her research focuses on comparative politics, immigration policy, race politics, and anti-discrimination policy, with a transatlantic perspective. She previously held leadership roles at McGill University, Menlo College, and the University of Texas at Austin.
Education: BA in International Relations from Stanford University (1987), PhD in Political Science from UCLA (2000). Prior roles include Vice-Provost for Undergraduate Curriculum at UT Austin and Provost at Menlo College. She has also advised on anti-racism initiatives at McGill and UBC.
Research emphasizes the intersection of migration and race, including her global partnership 'PROGRAM' to study racism and migration politics. Key books include The Roots of Racism (2022) and Radical Empathy (2021). Teaching focuses on European politics, transatlantic race dynamics, and critical analysis.
Awards include Fellowships at the Kolleg-Forschergruppe Berlin and Woodrow Wilson Center. Her work bridges academia and activism, advocating radical empathy to address systemic racism.
