Terrence Barrett, MD, is a Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Louisville, with a joint appointment in Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics. His research focuses on inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), mitochondrial function, T cell immunology, and Wnt signaling, with significant contributions to understanding epithelial repair mechanisms and microbiome interactions. He holds the Marcos Lins Andrade Endowed Chair in Gastroenterology and leads multiple federally funded projects including NIH grants on mitochondrial biogenesis and crypt fissioning in IBD healing.
- Doctor of Medicine (1983) - University of Illinois Medical College
- Bachelor of Science (1979) - University of Notre Dame
- Residency (1986) - Rush University
Barrett's research explores mitochondrial dysfunction in IBD pathogenesis, developing novel therapeutics like AUPHOS to enhance mitochondrial biogenesis, and investigating beta-catenin acetylation's role in intestinal wound healing. His work bridges clinical practice with translational research, addressing treatment optimization through precision dosing and biologic combination therapies.
Recent publications highlight 2025 breakthroughs in dual biologic therapy efficacy, PI3K signaling's protective role in radiation injury, and AUPHOS's metabolic correction in IBD models. Earlier studies (2024-2022) examined traumatic brain injury's intestinal effects, machine learning applications for medication adherence prediction, and Appalachian healthcare disparities in IBD outcomes.
- Member, Markey Cancer Center/Cancer Research Priority Initiative
- Substance Use Priority Research Area participant
- Translational Oncology Research Program contributor
Scientific honors include Fellowship in the American Gastroenterological Association (2019) and membership in the American Society for Clinical Investigation (2003). His research program has secured continuous funding through 2027, including NIH and University of Louisville grants.
