Tero Heinonen is a Doctoral researcher and PhD candidate in the Study of Religions at Åbo Akademi University, affiliated with the Donner Institute for Research into Religion and Culture. His ethnographic dissertation examines music-making in contemporary spirituality and new religious movements in Finland, with research funded by the Donner Institute, Åbo Akademi Graduate School, and the Society for Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS).
Heinonen holds a Master of Theology and Bachelor of Theology. His academic journey centers on exploring the sociological and psychological dimensions of religious experience through fieldwork in Finnish spiritual communities.
His research interests focus on the Sociology and Psychology of religious emotion, interaction ritual theory, role theories of religion, and musical experience in Indian guru movements. Heinonen investigates how music facilitates emotional connection and communal belonging in holistic spirituality, particularly through practices like Kirtan and spiritual singing circles. His work bridges religious studies, musicology, and anthropology to analyze emerging spiritual phenomena in Nordic contexts.
Analysis of his publications reveals consistent exploration of music as a conduit for emotional sacralization and identity formation in contemporary spirituality. Key thematic threads include cross-cultural appropriation of mystical practices, therapeutic applications of spiritual music, and the role of embodied rituals in fostering collective effervescence within new religious movements across Finland.
Heinonen's research is supported by competitive grants from the Donner Institute for Research into Religion and Culture, the Graduate School at Åbo Akademi University, and the Society for Swedish Literature in Finland (SLS). His academic activities include conference presentations on topics ranging from 'Sounding the gods, distilling wellbeing' to 'Kirtan and sacred chants as sites of learning', demonstrating active engagement with international scholarly networks.
As a researcher at the Donner Institute, Heinonen contributes to Finland's leading center for religious studies, participating in collaborative projects that examine lived religion and alternative spiritualities in the Nordic region. His upcoming 2025 conference presentations indicate continued focus on inner role-taking mechanisms and emotional dynamics within contemporary spiritual practices.
