Terje Johansen

Terje Johansen is a Professor of Biochemistry and Cell Biology at UiT The Arctic University of Norway. He serves as research group leader for the Autophagy Research Group and scientific leader of the Proteomics and Metabolomics core facility (PRiME) at UiT. His primary research focus is on mechanistic basic research within selective autophagy.

Professor Johansen's research interests span across multiple areas of cellular biology with emphasis on:

• Autophagy and selective autophagy mechanisms
• Cell signaling pathways
• Biochemical regulation of cellular processes
• Cancer research related to autophagy pathways
• Neurodegenerative disease mechanisms
• Gene regulation in cellular stress responses

His recent publications (2021-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on selective autophagy mechanisms, particularly examining ATG8 protein interactions, LIR motif functions, and the role of autophagy in cellular stress responses, cancer, and neurodegenerative conditions. His work often involves interdisciplinary approaches combining molecular biology, biochemistry, and computational methods.

Professor Johansen has received recognition for his contributions to autophagy research through numerous high-impact publications in prestigious journals such as Nature Communications, Molecular Cell, Autophagy, and Journal of Cell Biology.

He is actively involved in teaching at UiT, offering courses including:

Professor Johansen leads the Autophagy Research Group and is involved in multiple research projects including "Mitophagy Mechanisms in Cancer Drug Resistance" and previously led "Autophagy-regulated Signalosomes in Cellular Stress and Disease Pathways" (2016-2021).
