Dr. Terje Dokland is a Professor in the Department of Microbiology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), where he has been a faculty member since 2004. He also holds appointments as Senior Scientist at the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center (since 2022) and as Scientist at the Center for Biophysical Sciences and Engineering (since 2008). Dr. Dokland established and directs the UAB cryo-EM facility, which is part of the O'Neal Comprehensive Cancer Center's Structural Biology Shared Resource and houses advanced equipment including a Thermo Fisher Glacios 2 microscope and a Talos F200C microscope.
Dr. Dokland received his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in biology from the University of Oslo, Norway, followed by a PhD at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory in Heidelberg, Germany (1989-1993). He completed postdoctoral training at Purdue University (1994-1998) before holding an independent research position at the Institute of Molecular Agrobiology in Singapore (1998-2004). His research focuses on the structure and function of bacteriophages, particularly their role in mobilizing pathogenicity islands in Staphylococcus aureus, and more recently on the structure of the streptococcal ribosome.
His laboratory specializes in applying cryo-electron microscopy to determine high-resolution structures of viral components and bacterial systems. Recent publications (2023-2025) demonstrate continued productivity in structural virology, with multiple papers in high-impact journals describing the architecture of bacteriophage components and their interactions with bacterial hosts. His work has important implications for understanding bacterial pathogenesis and developing novel antimicrobial strategies.
