Teresa M. Bejan is a Professor of Political Theory and a Fellow of Oriel College at the University of Oxford, joining in 2015 from the University of Toronto. Her work bridges historical political philosophy with contemporary debates on civility, toleration, and equality.
- Education: BA, MPhil, PhD from the Universities of Chicago, Cambridge, and Yale (2013), respectively.
Her research explores free speech, civility, toleration, and equality through historical contexts, from ancient Athens to 20th-century analytic philosophy. Her acclaimed book Mere Civility (2017) defends a 'mere civility' ideal rooted in Roger Williams's American tradition, while her forthcoming First Among Equals (2023) traces pre-egalitarian equality concepts.
Recent publications and collaborations (2023–2019) focus on Hobbesian interpretations, equality's religious origins, and critiques of modern liberalism. She co-edited the Modern Intellectual History special forum on 'The Historical Rawls' (2021).
