Her academic credentials include:
- PhD in Sociology and Equity Studies (with Women and Gender Studies focus) from the University of Toronto
- Bachelor of Education degree
Dr. Adefarakan's research centers on Black Canadian Studies through decolonial and intersectional frameworks. She investigates Black Indigeneities as sites of resistance, develops methodologies for Indigenizing intersectionality to address femicide against Black women, and applies African Indigenous spiritualities to challenge deficit-based constructions of ability. Her work critically examines anti-Black racism manifestations in educational institutions and community resistance strategies against systemic oppression.
Her publications demonstrate consistent thematic focus on Yoruba epistemologies and critical race theory within the African Diaspora. The 2015 monograph "The Souls of Yoruba Folk" establishes her foundational work connecting spirituality with decolonial resistance, while her chapter in "Sharing Breath: Embodied Learning and Decolonization" advances pedagogical applications of African Indigenous knowledge systems for transformative education.
