Tekleab Mekbib

Tekleab Mekbib, MD, PhD, MPH is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Maternal and Child Health at the University of North Carolina’s Gillings School of Global Public Health. He holds advanced degrees including an MPH from UNC Chapel Hill (2015), a PhD in Obstetrics and Gynecology from the Otto Institute of Obstetrics and Gynecology in St. Petersburg (1988), and an MD from Pavlov First Medical Institute (1981).

His work focuses on implementation science and improvement science for global maternal and newborn health, collaborating with the WHO Collaborating Center on research evidence for sexual and reproductive health. He has led policy implementation initiatives, developed knowledge management systems for public health programs, and contributed to systematic reviews informing global health policies.

Prior roles include Department Head of Obstetrics/Gynecology at Yekatit 12 Hospital in Ethiopia, leadership in the Ethiopian Society of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, and editor-in-chief of the Ethiopian Journal of Reproductive Health. His career spans clinical practice, academic leadership, and policy advocacy in sub-Saharan Africa, particularly in safe motherhood and family planning.
