Dr. Tejas Bouklas is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Molecular, Microbial, and Structural Biology (MIMG) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), based in the Molecular Sciences Building. Her research focuses on microbiology, fungal pathogenesis, and antimicrobial discovery, with a commitment to experiential learning and mentoring students through programs like HHMI’s SEA-Phages and the Tiny Earth Initiative.
- Ph.D. in Biomedical Sciences, Albert Einstein College of Medicine
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, Department of Medicine (Division of Infectious Disease), Stony Brook University
Dr. Bouklas’ research explores aging mechanisms in pathogenic fungi such as Cryptococcus neoformans and Candida glabrata, linking cellular longevity to virulence and phenotypic variation. Her work also delves into lipid metabolism, pH homeostasis, and vaccine development for fungal infections. Publications highlight her contributions to understanding fungal biology and innovative pedagogical approaches in science education.
Scientific awards include the American Society of Microbiology Undergraduate Faculty Research Initiative Fellowship, recognizing her dedication to advancing infectious disease research and student training. Her students have co-authored papers, presented at national conferences, and received accolades for their research contributions.
