Ted Schatzki is a Professor of Geography, Philosophy, and Sociology at the University of Kentucky's College of Arts & Sciences. He previously served as Senior Associate Dean in the College, Chair of the Philosophy Department, and co-founder of the University’s Committee on Social Theory. His research focuses on practice theory, social change, materiality, and spatial studies, with significant contributions to interdisciplinary social thought. Schatzki holds a Ph.D. in Philosophy from UC Berkeley (1986), alongside degrees from Harvard and Oxford.
His academic career includes visiting roles at over 10 international institutions, including the Max Planck Institute and Aalborg University, where he received an honorary doctorate in 2018. Notable accolades include being ranked the 13th most cited philosopher globally in 2020. His work explores digital society’s spatial implications, blockchain’s institutional impacts, and the intersections of practice theory with phenomenology and Wittgensteinian philosophy.
Research interests span flat ontology, governance, and sustainability, with over 50 publications including five authored books and co-edited volumes on practice theory. His articles analyze crises, learning practices, and the socio-material dimensions of art and institutions. Schatzki’s interdisciplinary approach bridges geography, sociology, and philosophy, emphasizing material and spatial dimensions of human activity.
