Ted Lars Lennart Bergman

Dr Ted Bergman is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish at the University of St Andrews' School of Modern Languages. He specialises in Early Modern Spanish literature, theatre, and society, with a focus on criminality, humor, and medical humanities. His research includes projects funded by the Wellcome Trust for archival studies on medical performance in Early Modern Spain.

Dr Bergman holds a BA from Wesleyan University and a PhD from Princeton University. He teaches undergraduate modules including Don Quixote and honors courses on heroes and antiheroes. His PhD supervision focuses on Early Modern Spanish topics such as theatre, law, and medicine.

Research interests include early-modern Spanish theatre's intersection with criminality and humor, analysis of Don Quixote, and cultural connections between Iberia and Scandinavia. His work bridges historical texts with modern media, employing innovative pedagogical methods like using pop culture analogies.

Recent publications explore Golden Age literary techniques, medical rhetoric in theatre-funded hospitals, and transnational adaptations of classic texts. He actively contributes to digital humanities through reviews of archival resources like the Portal de Archivos Españoles.
