Ted Kafala

Dr. Ted Kafala is an Associate Professor of Communication at the University of Mount Saint Vincent, affiliated with the Division of Communication, Art, and Media within the Undergraduate College. He holds a PhD from Ohio State University, along with MA degrees from Ohio State and City University of New York, and a BA from George Washington University.

His research focuses on the intersection of technology and art, including critical code studies, generative processes in experimental media, and the aesthetics of computing. He teaches courses such as Visual Communication Design, Cinematics and Motion Graphics, and iOS Application Development. His work explores interdisciplinary experimentation, digital memory, and algorithmic culture through publications in venues like Evental Aesthetics and Film-Philosophy.

Dr. Kafala’s research trends emphasize the philosophical implications of digital media, including intermedial environments, software studies, and new materialisms. His presentations at conferences like Society for Cinema and Media Studies highlight his engagement with topics ranging from pseudorandomness in generative art to cinematic time in Peter Greenaway’s work.
