Ted Coffey is the Chair and Professor of Composition and Computer Technologies in the Department of Music at the University of Virginia. He holds a Ph.D. and M.F.A. in composition from Princeton University, an M.F.A. in electronic music and recording media from Mills College, and an A.B. in music from Dartmouth College.
His research focuses on acoustic, electronic, and mixed composition; experimental music; interactive technologies; sound installations; and music for dance. Coffey has collaborated extensively with dance companies like the Bill T. Jones / Arnie Zane Dance Company, contributing to works such as Story/Time. His writings on aesthetics and politics in the performing arts have garnered prestigious awards from the Josephine De Kármán and Andrew C. Mellon Foundations.
He has served as President of the Society for Electro-Acoustic Music in the United States (SEAMUS) from 2018 to 2022. His music is featured on multiple labels, including Ellipsis Arts and Ravello, and has been performed globally at venues like Lincoln Center, ZKM, and the Korean National University of the Arts.
