Ted A. Warfield is a Professor of Philosophy at the University of Notre Dame, affiliated with the Department of Philosophy within the College of Arts and Letters. His research focuses on theoretical and applied philosophy, including epistemology, philosophy of action (particularly free will), philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and applied ethics in medicine, law, and animal ethics. He holds a Ph.D. from Rutgers University.
Warfield teaches at both graduate and undergraduate levels. His graduate seminars cover philosophy of mind, ethical theory, meta-ethics, and philosophy of action. Undergraduate courses emphasize applied ethics, philosophy of law (criminal and constitutional law), and philosophy of medicine (psychiatry, end-of-life care, and law/medicine intersections). He actively advises pre-law and pre-med students.
As a PhD supervisor, Warfield has guided 17 students across diverse topics, including epistemology, metaphysics, and formal epistemology. Notable co-supervisors include Robert Audi, Alvin Plantinga, and Peter van Inwagen. He is known for demanding rigor and dedicated support for students' career trajectories.
