Tawnya L. Cary is an Assistant Professor of Biology at Beloit College and Co-Chair of the Environmental Studies program. She holds a PhD in Zoology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, an MS in Biological Sciences from the University of South Carolina, and a BS in Biology from Iowa State University.
Her research focuses on aquatic ecotoxicology, investigating how environmental contaminants like PCBs, PBDEs, and nitrates impact immune function, growth, and development in amphibians such as frogs and tadpoles. She also explores biology education, particularly student learning of core concepts and fostering identity/belonging in STEM fields.
As director of the Wisconsin Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (WiscLSAMP) program, she supports underrepresented students in STEM through academic and professional development initiatives. Her office is located in Room 337 of the Sanger Center for the Sciences.
