Dr. Tasia Scrutton is an Associate Professor at the School of Philosophy, Religion and History of Science, University of Leeds. She specializes in the philosophy of religion, religion's intersection with mental health, and philosophical approaches to emotion and psychiatry. Her work explores how religious interpretations influence experiences of mental illness and well-being.
Education: M.Theol (Hons) from the University of St Andrews, MA and PhD from Durham University. Previous roles include the Frederick J. Crosson Research Fellowship at the University of Notre Dame (2011–2012) and Associate Lecturer at the Open University (2006–2012). She has conducted research at UFRGS in Brazil (2014–2015).
Research focuses on understanding the coexistence of psychopathology and religious experience, evaluating theological interpretations of depression (e.g., sin, demonic possession, transformative potential), and the role of religious practices in well-being. Current projects include investigating how religious communities can better include individuals with cognitive impairments or mental disorders.
