Dr Tasha Aylett serves as a Research Fellow in the School of Chemistry at the University of Leeds' Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, specializing in atmospheric chemistry and climate modeling with a focus on extraterrestrial impacts and ionospheric phenomena.
She earned her MChem in Chemistry from the University of Sussex (2014) followed by a PhD in Atmospheric Chemistry at Leeds under Professor John Plane. Her doctoral research examined Halley's comet dust encounters at 100,000 km distance using the Whole Atmosphere Community Climate Model (WACCM), analyzing effects on upper atmosphere chemistry, stratospheric aerosols, and meteoric deposition. Complementary experimental work characterized meteoric smoke optical properties via the Photochemical Aerosol Flow System (PAFS) and Molecular Flow Ice Cell-Trapped Reactive Atmospheric Particle Spectrometer (MICE-TRAPS).
Current research investigates sporadic E layers (SpEs) – transient metallic ion layers (90-140 km altitude) affecting VHF radio propagation and satellite drag – through global climate modeling. Additional work explores 21st-century ionospheric composition changes driven by greenhouse gases and stratospheric ozone recovery across D, E, and lower F regions. Her experimental expertise spans specialized aerosol analysis systems developed for atmospheric particulate studies.
